My work is focused on exploring, imagining and prototyping future-forward creative concepts for human-centered technology. I incorporate ethical and social issues into my practice to design products that speculate and question the implications of technology in today’s society and that of the future.

Daan Walder

In my work, I focus on the societal impact of technology. Within this area, I mainly focus my research on ethics and technology. In the past year, I've been researching and developing solutions for the ethical and societal implications of biometrics and surveillance in AI. I engage my practice with a social context, using design as a means of speculating about how things could be, examining also the possible negative implications of introducing specific technologies into everyday life – imagining possible futures. I’m currently working on my graduation project where I look at affect recognition and the ethical implications that come with this technology.

As a designer, I set myself apart in my knowledge of many different design disciplines. From an early age, I’ve been driven by my curiosity for art, design, and technology. At the time, drawing, painting, photography, and videography were my mediums. At the age of twelve, I discovered digital mediums like Photoshop, After Effects, web design, and graphic design. By that time, I started to learn how to code in Javascript and build websites using HTML and CSS. I build my first online webstore when I was fourteen, where I’d sell T-shirts with my own graphics printed on them. This interest in digital design and my urge to create, let me to study interaction design at the HKU University of the Arts Utrecht. During this study, I found my passion for social design and critical design. I discovered my interest in human rights and the complex societal issues of today. During my time at HKU, I’ve learned the fundamentals of graphic design, web design, game design, UX/UI Design, and Interaction Design. This makes me versatile and enables me to approach a challenge with the right technology. Though my expertise lies in Interaction Design; enabling me to design interactive installations, objects, and screen-based works that explore the most pressing topics of today. I proactively try to engage professionals and experts in my practice to improve my research.
